Located in between St Bede’s Comprehensive School and Howletch Lane Primary School, Woodhouse Park is a large public open space of about 12 acres (that’s equivalent to almost 200 tennis courts!) situated off Balliol Close in Peterlee, SR8 2NX.
The park has ample free public parking, public toilets and picnic facilities as well as play facilities for children and the young-at-heart to enjoy. The park was created by Peterlee Town Council in 1998 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the designation of the Town.
Did you know?
The name Woodhouse Park was chosen in recognition of the lengthy service to Peterlee by the Reverend Canon Keith Woodhouse, who was a Vicar to St. Cuthbert’s Church in the town.
Woodhouse Park offers many attractions including green open spaces, a number of different play areas aimed at different ages and including wheelchair-friendly accessible play equipment, a pump bike track (for all ages!), skate park, parkour facility, a multi-use sports facility plus a fantastic community garden.
There are 4 pedestrian entrance gates to the park, situated at Cheviot Place and Burnhope Way, and the main entrance off Balliol Close which also has the parks only vehicle entrance and car park.
The Town Council has a Parks Team based at Woodhouse and you will often see them in and around the park or the Council premises and greenhouses near the main entrance.
It is a wonderful Park in which to spend some time enjoying the facilities and open air, on your own, with friends and family young or old, or walking the dog (dogs must be kept on a lead at all times please).
The Town Council has invested around £200,000 in new play facilities and other improvements in the park in the last 12 months and has received lots of positive feedback about the improvements that have been made in the park.
Peterlee Town Council aims to continue to improve the use and enjoyment of Woodhouse Park for the entire community and works closely with local residents and other community groups. If you would like to get involved in the park by volunteering to help in the community garden, litter-picking or any other activities then please contact the Town Council on (0191) 586 2491 or email council@peterlee.gov.uk and someone will get in touch with more information.
